Nutritional Myths that Just Wont Die: Protein!
When it comes to the topic of sports nutrition there are many myths and fallacies that float around like some specter in the shadows. They pop up when you least expect them and throw a monkey wrench into the best laid plans of the hard training athlete trying to make some headway.
Surrender To The Spell Of The Pyramid
Food in general has the distinction of being probably the
first thing we all think about in the mornings before our feet
hit the floor. The main reason for this is we cannot survive without it. There are four major food groups arranged in what is commonly
called the food pyramid. At the base of the food pyramid lies the
group that contains breads, grains, pastas and cereals. These foods provide complex carbohydrates, which are an important source of energy, especially for a low-fat meal plan. You can make various low-fat choices from foods in this group.

Got Sprouts?
They're not only good for you, but they taste good,
too. Sprouts are also a great source of vitamins,
fiber, protein, anti-oxidants, and enzymes. A sprout
is produced when a seed starts growing into a
vegetable. Sprouts can grow from the seeds of
vegetables, from grains such as buckwheat, and from
beans. While Mung beans are perhaps the most common
source of sprouts, you can also obtain good results
from lentils, soybeans and chickpeas just to name a
few.
Reading Labels:Understanding Fiber, Fat, Carbohydrates, Etc
Since 1994, food manufacturers have required the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to include food labels on all packaged food items. Labels can be a tremendous help in controlling our diets?but only if we understand them. Here is a primer to use as you browse the labels in your panty and at the grocery:
Nutrition Is More Than The Nutrition Facts Box
Nutrition usually only comes up when people are finally deciding to diet. By that point, the only purpose of mentioning nutrition is just to find a reason why one particular diet might be better than another. However, most fad diets do not work nearly as well as the originators claim they will, due to the nature of most strict diets.
A Look at Lactose Intolerance
Lactose is the primary carbohydrate in milk. Cow?s milk
contains 4-5% lactose, whereas human milk contains
almost twice that amount. Lactose provides 30-50% of the
energy in milk, depending on the fat content (skim vs.
homogenized).
A number of individuals are affected by lactose in the diet,
but there is a difference between intolerance and
maldigestion.

Cholesterol Does Not Cause Heart Disease
Cholesterol is an essential building block of every cell in the body, required for all metabolic processes. It is particularly important in the production of nerve tissue, bile and certain hormones. On average, our body produces about half of a gram to one gram of cholesterol per day, depending on how much of it the body needs at the time. By and large, our body is able to produce 400 times more cholesterol per day than what we would obtain from eating 3,5 ounces (100 grams) of butter. The main cholesterol producers are the liver and the small intestine, in that order. Normally, they are able to release cholesterol directly into the blood stream, where it is instantly tied to blood proteins. These proteins, which are called lipoproteins, are in charge of transporting the cholesterol to its numerous destinations. There are three main types of lipoproteins in charge of transporting cholesterol: Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL), and High Density Lipoprotein (HDL).
Copping Out the Positive Effects of Copper
One must always keep in mind that copper is not just a kind of metal, when it comes to medicine and health, copper is actually a trace element mineral that serves a wide variety of purposes for the body, both on its own as well as a cofactor. Although the body requires a comparatively tiny amount of copper per day, even that little bit of copper is proven to be essential to having very good health.
The Toxic Truth About Artificial Sweeteners
The problem with sugar is that it doesn't contain any nutrients so when you consume too much you crowd out room for healthier foods. In fact, it is estimated that on average, Americans consume over 200 pounds of refined sugar annually. Soy Phytoestrogens and the Art of Propaganda
In this newsletter we will discuss the current controversy about soy phytoestrogens. The established literature to date is replete with studies that find soy phytoestrogens beneficial to disease prevention including prevention of breast cancer. There is, however, some current literature coming from a publication know as Nexus Magazine which, for the most part, parrots the "literature" from the Weston A. Price Foundation. I have attempted to present this literature as I have found it.
